Saving the world from PLASTIC!

5-6H have taken up the gauntlet to save the world from plastic!

We have been investigating the effects plastic has on animals, the environment and the future.

Some interesting facts students have found out are:

  • Did you know that the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is bigger than NSW?
  • Did you know that in 1 square kilometre of ocean, there is over 13 000 pieces of plastic?
  • It takes 1 000 years for plastic to decompose.
  • It only takes one year for rubbish to travel from Adelaide to New Zealand.
  • The ocean has become the biggest dump in the world.
  • 10 million single-use plastic bags are used each day in Australia.
  • We throw out enough plastic to circle the world four times each year.
  • 80% of the plastic in the ocean is from plastic bags.
  • Birds are being found with over 250 pieces of plastic in their stomachs. This is the equivalent to a human having three 2 litre milk bottles in their stomach.
  • 3.5 million pieces of plastic wash into the ocean each day from Australia.
  • Plastic kills animals – they eat it or get tangled in it.

We have commenced a waste audit at the school. We will be proposing some recommendations and strategies that the school can implement to reduce the amount of plastic and rubbish we are sending to landfill.
