Student Leadership Development

Student Leadership Development

Student Voice is a key component of our school culture here at Tweed Heads South PS. One avenue that provided a voice to students is our Student Leadership team.

All Year 5 students will participate in the Leadership @ School and Beyond Program during Term 4. The program will be conducted by Stage 3 teachers and the Assistant Principal and Principal. The program will address the following items:

  • What is Leadership?
  • Where do we see leaders?
  • What do leaders do?
  • What does leadership mean?

The Behaviours & Qualities of a Leader

  • What are the qualities and behaviours of a leader?
  • Why would people want to be led by you?
  • Who do you think are good examples of effective leaders?
  • What does doing the right thing mean? How does this apply here at school?
  • When might you be called upon to take a stand for what's right?
  • How do we encourage other people to act and behave in a particular way?

Developing the Leader's role at school

  • What is the purpose of your position as a student leader?
  • What do you think are the things you will be required to do as a student leader?

Selection of student leaders is a process. Following expression of interest, interviews and executive reviews are conducted to select Student Leaders. Suitability includes showing the ability to make decisions for themselves (without peer pressure), demonstrates exemplary behaviour – acts with integrity, respect, fairness and safety, have shown a willingness to be involved in extracurricular activities, displays initiative, works well as a team member, possess strong communication skills and proudly wears school uniform.

The panel will meet on Monday 27 November 2017 and interview the students expressing interest in submitting an application for a school student leader role in 2018. The panel will consist of the Principal, Assistant Principal, Stage 3 Staff Representative, current 2017 School Captains and a P&C Parent Representative (this P&C parent will not be the parent of any of the applying students).

Eight (8) students will be selected to represent our school as student leaders in 2018 (any combination of students e.g. 4 boys, 4 girls or 1 girl, 7 boys) based on these interviews and applications. The student body (Years 2 – 5 and staff) will vote for elected school captains from the pool of eight (8) selected leaders following their speeches at assembly on Friday 1 December 2017. This will be a secret ballot style vote with ‘first past the post' students elected as school captains.

Students and their families will be notified of either being successful or unsuccessful in receiving a student leadership placement for 2018 before the Presentation Day (Friday, 8 December 2017) in writing. Official announcement of the student leaders will be made at this year's Presentation Day. An Induction Ceremony will be held in early 2018 for the student leadership team which will also include House Captains.
