Students reviewed the word "collage" and what it meant before beginning our class discussion about their new project, creating an Owl collage. They learned the word "nocturnal" and discussed why we might make our collages on a black paper background.
We proceeded to draw the outline of an owl and began filling in the area with torn paper to create the owl's body. After we completed that we added details including the eyes and beak and soon a parliament of owls, each with its own unique personality, came to roost in the Art room.
Students even added the moon and some stars using oil pastels and glitter to build atmosphere for their owl, perched on a branch in the moonlight.
The students, seeing their amazing creations, agreed that this activity was a HOOT!
